Hard Pastels (Conté)

The traditional brick red colour of the hard pastel ( Conté) is the closest modern equivalent to the red chalk the Old Masters used in Europe during medieval times - and today we can see why with this excellent sketching material.

Conté sticks or Conté crayons, are composed of compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with a wax or clay base, square in cross-section.
